WHICH SUITCASE TO BUY: A GUIDE TO CHOOSING A SUITCASE
One of the most painful aspects of a holiday is to pack: everyone loves to go on vacation, but they hate preparing their suitcases. If you are traveling by plane there is also the problem of having to respect a certain weight (which usually stands at 15-20 kilos for most airlines), otherwise the payment of every extra pound is foreseen. The same applies to the dimensions, which usually must not exceed 158 cm by adding height, width and depth: for larger dimensions additional costs are foreseen.
The problem, however, is not just to pack, but also which suitcase to choose. It is indeed possible to include too many types of suitcases: soft, rigid and semi-rigid, large, medium and small, of different materials (plastic, canvas, carbon), of different colors and particular patterns.
The choice of the type of suitcase depends on which trip you intend to do: whether it is a long trip or a weekend, or if it is a trip by plane or by train or car. It also depends on the purpose of the trip: whether it is a journey of relaxation, business or a holiday full of adventure.
Usually if you travel by air, regardless of whether you are traveling for pleasure or work, a rigid suitcase is indicated. Large, voluminous, waterproof, almost indestructible, the rigid suitcase is the queen of airport conveyor belts. So, if you are looking for something robust, for a long journey in the hold of an airplane, here is the suitcase that suits you. In fact, it is good to remember that the suitcases at the airport do not handle the suitcases very carefully (they are often thrown!) And the rigid ones allow to cushion the shots, avoiding that something breaks inside. The size of the suitcase will depend on the amount of time spent traveling. The rigid suitcase is therefore suitable for families, for long stays without too many displacements and as “custody” for your souvenirs.
The semi-rigid and soft suitcases are perfect for travel by train and car, when space is limited and therefore need to be adapted to the best. However, they are often used on airplanes, but I suggest you to wrap them directly from the cellophane at the airport or put an extra external belt that holds them firmly, as well as a lock to prevent them from opening during the flight and trolley – conveyor roller (remote possibility, but nevertheless possible).
More and more widespread, because they are very comfortable, the trolleys are instead recommended for those traveling for business or for those leaving for a weekend, maybe they are a European capital. Equipped with wheels, they allow you to move comfortably to the airports and to the cities, almost free from the weight of the luggage. If you plan to bring your trolley as hand baggage, however, pay attention to the size and weight not to exceed the limits of the airline.
If you travel with little luggage, an easy, elegant and comfortable solution is definitely the travel bag. Spend some fashion, they are recently coming back into fashion and becoming trendy. Absolutely recommended for those who choose adventure trips.
Which suitcase to buy then? The first tip is to buy a set of mixed suitcases: a large rigid suitcase (usually the large suitcases have these dimensions 75x60x25) perfect for long journeys on airplanes, a medium soft suitcase and a small soft perfect for travel by train and car. If you want to save money try to postpone the time of purchase to the months of sales (in January or summer in July and August) and remember that the high price does not always correspond to a higher quality of the product, indeed sometimes it is the opposite. In this way you will be able to save 20-30% of the catalog price and if you are lucky even more. Another way to save money is to buy online directly from the manufacturer of suitcases, or from online travel accessories stores.
If you are undecided about color and imagination, the advice is to choose a dark color that can hide scratches and dirt. The suitcases in pastel colors are beautiful, but leave time for a trip to lose the brilliance. So better to choose a suitcase blue, black, gray or dark red solid color, the patterns and the writings with the time get tired.
Other tips to follow when buying the suitcase are related to the characteristics of the suitcase itself. For example, a two-wheeled trolley is preferable compared to one to four: the four wheels allow you to push the suitcase without towing it (only possible on flat surfaces, such as in airports, but not in the city), however models are often more comfortable two-wheelers because they are more stable in transport.
